Why aren&#8217;t we instantly crushed? The answer lies in a fascinating combination of physics and human biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Secret: Internal vs. External Pressure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary reason you don&#8217;t feel the crushing weight of the atmosphere is that your body is pushing back with the exact same amount of force.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air is a fluid, meaning it doesn&#8217;t just press straight down on your head; it flows around you and presses against you evenly from all directions.<sup><\/sup> Furthermore, the human body is not a hollow, empty shell. Once your body equalizes the pressure (such as when your Eustachian tubes open to let air in or out), the sensation vanishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The &#8220;Hand on the Table&#8221; Illusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A common question people ask is: <em>If air pushes from all sides, why don&#8217;t I feel the pressure pressing down on the back of my hand when I place it flat on a table?<sup><\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even when your hand is pressed against a flat surface, microscopic gaps allow air to flow underneath it, pushing up against your palm with the exact same force that is pushing down on the back of your hand.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To truly feel atmospheric pressure, you have to remove the air pushing back. This is exactly how suction cups work. If you stick a wet suction cup to a table and squeeze the air out from underneath, there is no longer any internal air pushing out.
