On the second day of the 65th National Senior Federation Cup Athletics Championship, 25-year-old sprinter from Punjab, Gurindervir Singh, completely rewrote the history books in the men’s 100-meter dash.

Representing Reliance Foundation, Gurindervir delivered an unbelievable performance, clocking a blistering time of 10.09 seconds to secure the gold medal and establish a brand new Indian national record.

Shattering the 10.10-Second Barrier

Gurindervir’s achievement marks a watershed moment for Indian sprinting. With this phenomenal run, he has become the first Indian athlete in history to break the elusive 10.10-second barrier in the 100m event. This historic sprint officially crowns him as the “fastest man in Indian history.”

A Thrilling Two-Day Battle for the Record

The 100m event at this year’s Federation Cup was nothing short of a cinematic thriller, with the national record being broken three times within a span of 24 hours in a fierce rivalry with Odisha’s Animesh Kujur:

Semi-final Heat 1 (Friday): Gurindervir Singh fired the opening warning shot, clocking 10.17 seconds to break Animesh Kujur’s previous national record of 10.18 seconds.

Semi-final Heat 2 (Friday): Just minutes later, Animesh Kujur struck back in his heat, clocking a stunning 10.15 seconds to reclaim the national record.

The Final (Saturday): Saving his absolute best for last, Gurindervir exploded out of the blocks in the final to clock 10.09 seconds. He left the competition in the dust, reclaiming the record and the gold. Animesh Kujur secured silver with 10.20 seconds, while Pranav Kurav took bronze at 10.29 seconds.

Ticket to the Commonwealth and Asian Games

Beyond the domestic accolades, Gurindervir’s 10.09-second mark is a massive boost for India’s international prospects. His timing comfortably breaches the qualification standards set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, which was pegged at 10.16 seconds.

Making Waves Across Asia

The impact of this race extends beyond India’s borders. Gurindervir’s time is currently the second-fastest 100m time recorded in Asia this season. The only sprinter on the continent to run a faster time this year is 19-year-old Japanese sensation Fukuto Komuro, who clocked 10.08 seconds.

Following his historic victory, an elated Gurindervir credited his mental toughness for helping him stay focused amidst the intense pressure and thanked his family, coaching staff, and support team for their unwavering backing.

A Day of Tumbling Records

Gurindervir’s sprint was the crown jewel of a day where Indian athletes pushed their absolute limits. Two other significant national records fell on the same day:

Men’s 400m: Vishal T K made history by clocking 44.98 seconds, becoming the first Indian runner to break the 45-second mark in the 400m sprint.

Decathlon: Star athlete Tejaswin Shankar broke his own national record by accumulating a massive 8057 points, successfully surpassing the Glasgow Commonwealth Games qualification mark (7787 points).

Indian athletics witnessed a monumental day at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium on Saturday.
